Welfare - WF001

  • Ancestor and Cavendish are two well-known London producers working under different names. Anonymity is beyond tired in the world of techno by now, but the duo's new Welfare Records label gets off to a strong enough start that we can look past the clichéd identity politics. Each producer's personality comes through on his solo track. Ancestor specializes in a subterranean strain of techno, and "Cocksure" balances a funky bassline with eerie atmospherics. It's flighty compared to the ironclad thwack of Cavendish's "Die Cut." Pockmarked and gritty where "Cocksure" is pristine, "Die Cut" has the erratic quality of old hardware corralled into a quantized grid. Those roughshod sounds return for "Orphic," a collaboration by the duo and the EP's obvious standout. Ancestor and Cavendish's abilities lock together like jigsaw pieces—the leaden kick drums work in tandem with Ancestor's tribal touch, and a shroud of ambience smooths out the more abrasive elements.
