CW/A - Day Of Riddance

  • The Italian producers Clockwork and Avatism are mostly known for making house, which they've scattered over labels like Life And Death and Hot Creations since 2011, but these days they're making techno. The pair have collaborated since 2012, when they released a bass-heavy tech house monster called "One Trick Pony" on Dumb Unit. In 2014, they linked up under a new guise, CW/A, which explored similarly high-impact sounds but with a clear techno focus. CW/A material has mostly come via Vakant, the Berlin label that released Conducting The Method last year. Day Of Riddance arrives on Parachute, a techno label with work from Answer Code Request, Deadbeat and Max_M in its catalogue. CW/A's palette might be a lot steelier these days, but there's still a big-room vibe in their recent cuts. Day Of Riddance's galloping, functional title track continues that trend, capped off by a thick blanket of haze and growling distortion. "Lintwurm," the other original, is glossier and features a few more big-room tropes (an air raid siren, white noise) coupled with a broken beat, while remixes from Lucy and Dario Zenker sit on the flip. Both give an indication of where each producer is currently at: just like his tracks on Stroboscopic Artefact's five-year anniversary series, Lucy's rework of "Lintwurm" is dubby and groovy, while Zenker's "Day Of Riddance" features the same slamming breakbeats that characterised his and his brother's recent Immersion full-length.
