Alex Coulton - Freefall EP

  • Sharing a taste for club music that services the mind as much as the body, Bloc. and Alex Coulton are a natural pairing. The Mancunian's three-tracker sits in sharp contrast to the melodic churn of the label's first release, presenting a style of music that Bloc. is known for: gritty, driving techno. Bolstering the two originals is a remix from Function and Inland, the duo behind Infrastructure New York. "Freefall" and "Antagonise" are the straightest and hardest tracks Coulton has released to date, and you can tell he's still finding his feet a little. The title cut is angular and low-slung, with smoggy strokes and cantering kicks. It certainly packs a punch, but somehow the synths don't hit home like they should. The same goes for "Antagonise," which aims to build atmosphere by scattering metronomic bleeps and metallic sounds over a charging groove, but ultimately the Berghain-style vibe Coulton is after never quite materialises. Function and Inland's take on "Freefall" is, on the other hand, an example of how it's done, with startling attention to detail and sense of timing. From the faint crackle on the half-step drums to the way the droning pads whir in and out of the mix, every second speaks to the pair's decades of experience.
