Steve Legget - Aquarius

  • Apartment Records is one of those labels you forget about until they come out of nowhere with a killer release. And across records from Lerosa, VernoN and Tr One, the Dublin outfit has had its share of great music. For its first record of 2015, Apartment taps Steve Legget for "Aquarius," an ultra-smooth house tune with Greg Blackman on vocals. Legget is one half of Four Hands, the duo behind the bewitching "Hizou" on Claremont 56 back in 2010. You can hear that song's shapely contours in his "Believe Mix," which is like a house track with all the parts heated to the verge of melting. There's an etching in the runout groove dedicated to a tree that once stood at Baskerville Hall, the home of Freerotation, and it's easy to imagine the track's snaking groove entrancing an audience at the festival. Mark Hand, another relatively under-the-radar artist, remixes "Aquarius" as a live jam with Rhodes, hand percussion from Darren Moore and garagey vocal cut-ups. It's a different vibe from that of the original, but it does justice to Blackman's impassioned performance, which unfortunately can't be said for NCW's "Lost In The DMZ" version. Though it's a fine driving techno tune, Blackman feels wedged where he doesn't belong, detracting from both the instrumental and the vocal.
