Tom Trago - Hidden Heart Of Gold

  • "Hidden Heart Of Gold," a near-13-minute hike through misty sounds and gently undulating string sections, is an echo of Tom Trago's most famous record, "Use Me Again (And Again)." At the same time, it feels very much rooted in the "now"—emotional house records are more in vogue than ever. The "Main Mix" of "Hidden Heart Of Gold" is pitched between Forevernevermore-era Moodymann and the modern frame of Dutch house. The track sways with plush melodies and, crucially, luxurious textures, which are polished in some places and gritty in others. It's generously furnished with porous bass pads, supple clicks and layered vocals. These small, neatly assembled details give it an air of sophistication, and it feels intimate in a way that many other supposedly emotional tracks out there at the moment do not. The "Ambient Mix" of "Hidden Heart Of Gold" is unexpectedly magisterial in its latter stages, but it achieves its calmer aims: as it drifts by you can't help but imagine a smoke machine fitfully puffing white wisps onto an empty dance floor.
