Jozef K. / Winter Son - Brave

  • Winter Son and Jozef K. are an odd musical couple. The former is an abstract electronica producer, while the latter is a resident DJ at Sankeys in Ibiza. This is their second EP together, and it's only a partially successful mesh of styles. Both originals pull roughly the same trick as on the pair's debut, The Straw That Broke The Camel's Back, backing the dramatic vocals of returning guest Mz Sunday with sparse instrumentation before adding muscular electronics. Both "Brave" and "Loveless Vessel" are appealing enough, but they ultimately sound like an uneasy combinations of sounds. Gerd Janson and Philip Lauer's remix of "Loveless Vessel" in their Tuff City Kids guise is the package's brightest light by a clear distance. It bears very little resemblance to the original, with only small fragments of vocals remaining in a hearty brew of 909 kicks, thick bass, a killer breakdown and irresistible keys. Shield's re-edit of "Loveless Vessel," meanwhile, is a pretty unremarkable mid-paced groover that shears the original of its vocals but doesn't add anything terribly interesting in their stead.
