Christopher Joseph - Mind At Sea

  • Christopher Joseph is a young Berlin-based producer who works at Record Loft, a used vinyl outlet in Kreuzberg. He's been running a techno label called Flexxseal since 2013, through which he's put out three EPs. The latest is Mind At Sea, a versatile five-tracker. It leans towards the heavier, more distorted end of the techno spectrum, but this overall approach is offset by the record's title track, which is one of the finest deep techno tools of the year so far. Among other things, Joseph is likely a student of the modern Berlin school of techno. Rough sound design and distortion suggests a soft spot for the UK industrialist approach, but he has greater success when taking a more subtle and cleaner route. The steady grooves of "Wide Awake" and "Mind At Sea" are perfect for DJs with a linear, subtle approach to their sets. The latter is particularly good, pairing a pensive and spacious aesthetic with a hammering kick and a trippy low-end—expect Joseph to go places if he can put together more tracks like this. "Sometimes I Don't Know" and "In The Cage" are different beasts. They're more aggressive and harsh, but DJs brave enough to throw them on at peak-time could do a lot worse.
