Guilhem Monin - Omen EP

  • If you're a regular on the Hackney Wick warehouse scene in London, chances are you've come across the Colors crew. Since April 2013, the majority French collective have been throwing fun, flamboyant parties in the area's various industrial spaces, pairing dress themes ("Silver Moon Space Disco," "Thousand And One Purple Nights," "Leopard") with a feel-good soundtrack of house, techno, funk and disco. Run by DJs and producers, it was only a matter of time before Colors expanded to include a record label. Colors co-founder Guilhem Monin now steps up for the label's second EP. Listening to "Omen" and "All The Way Back," you'd never guess this was Monin's first release. Both are the kind of stylish house cuts that usually capture the floor, blending warm, classically-rooted grooves with crisp production values and catchy melodies. The title track is particularly good, weaving sexy vocal snippets with saxophone solos and a buttery bassline. It's a combination that so often feels cheesy, but here you're left with a classy warm-up cut. "All The Way Back" is just as easy on the ears, though its synths and spliced vocals give it a more stuttered lilt. On remix duty, former Colors guest Boo Williams closes the EP with a peak-time take on "Omen." The American does a tidy job, retaining the shuffling swing of the original while throwing in fierce claps and darting synths.
