Shake - Club Scam EP

  • Trance Fusion was a short-lived but prolific KMS sublabel that across 1992 and 1993 released 18 records. Club Scam, released by Anthony "Shake" Shakir towards the end of the label's run, was one of its best 12-inches. The EP was among Shakir's first releases, but its immediacy and sense of fun, particularly on the A-side, showed the Detroit producer's talent to be fully developed. Both mixes of "That's What I Want"—which, in truth, aren't too different from each other—sample The B-52s' "Mesopotamia." Shakir loops Kate Pierson's vocal on both, manipulating an insistent cry to make it sound almost carnal. Garage-y percussion gives the A-side a rambunctious energy, but the synths give these tracks a euphoric edge, too. "The Ying & Yang (Frictional Mix)" feels mildly MK-influenced, but about halfway through, the sickly hum of a glass note, drifting into the drum break, reminds you of Shakir's taste for weird flourishes. Closing the EP, "My Mantra" hews to the same style—staccato horns, looped vocals, regal pads, clattering percussion—and in doing so maintains the EP's exemplary standards.
