- Praveen Sharma has been quiet since Sepalcure ended, but he's springing back to life in 2015 with his first album as Braille, and this collaboration with fellow Brooklynite Matthew Young (AKA Seafloor). While the new Braille material touches on something more song-oriented, Rights pulls Sharma back to Sepalcure's svelte grooves.
It's not a dead ringer for classic Sepalcure, but The Meaning does sound like it's been ripped out of 2011. There are manicured melodies, rhythms that stumble into new formations every few bars, and more vocal samples than any one song probably needs. It's an inviting style—just try to resist the smooth curves of "Cold in The B," or the cozy nooks of "Heartbeat." Sometimes the duo get too comfortable, though. "Can't Forget" sounds amateurish, as if the samples were persistently slipping out of the duo's hands.
The preoccupation with vocals clouds the focus of otherwise sharp songs. "On The Phone" is a nice balance of silk and grit that's weighed down by an unfortunate sample ("I want to fuck you on the phone"), and the winding "I Believe" has as many cheesy vocal runs as it does brilliant twists and change-ups. The debut EP from Rights has enough of those little surprises to make it worthwhile—they could just do with some fine-tuning.
