- Few producers in house and techno are as prolific as Mr G, and fewer still are as consistent. Take 2014 for example: he put out one of the year's most intimate and cohesive club albums, and either side of its release we were treated to classy EPs on Bass Culture, Toi Toi and his own Phoenix G (to name just a few). The UK veteran wrapped up another rock-solid 12 months with a slick two-tracker on Made In Soho, the new label from iconic London store Black Market Records.
Like most of Colin Mcbean's music, "Absorb (G's Sundaze Mix)" and "Buff Zenky" are both angular house cuts built for the dance floor. The A-side is Mcbean at his most recognisable, with muggy synths and slinky female samples riding one of his signature sturdy grooves. Mcbean's back catalogue contains countless tracks in this style, but the depth of feeling in every element stops the formula from wearing thin. The same applies to "Buff Zenky," though it's at the harder end of Mcbean's range. A funky four-note synth line stomps over marching kicks and techno snares, propelled forward by an automated vocal snippet and a late splurge of melodic flickers. The standfirst to Mr G's recent RA podcast reads "Just good house music," and it's hard to think of a better way to describe what's on offer here.
