Braiden - Apex Of The Sun's Way / Solar Poise

  • The lethargic pace of Steve Braiden's release schedule (this 12-inch means he's now released five tracks in total since 2010) may be about to pick up slightly. Apex Of The Sun's Way / Solar Poise is the first release on his new Off Out label, and Braiden has said he'll release at least one more 12-inch on the label this year. These two cuts should have most people licking their lips at this prospect. "Apex Of The Sun's Way" in particular is an absolute treat. It wastes little time getting stuck into the heavy low-end that's defined Braiden's past work, with a slab of bass latching onto clacking percussion and vocal croaks. The dominance of the bass makes it more linear than anything Braiden has previously released, though a sharp, distorted melody does poke brightly through the haze. "Solar Poise" is like a rockabilly interpretation of "Apex…" Its central groove shifts jauntily, coming off at turns like the product of a synth and a bass guitar. An erratic collage of bleeps, whistles and howls complete a brew that packs almost as much atmospheric punch as its predecessor.
