- Berlin techno duo I/Y have already accumulated a solid following after just a handful of releases. They've released original music on three labels in total, but their best work has been on their own I/Y imprint. I/Y 004 is the latest, and is significantly more sinister than the deeper tracks they've delivered so far. It's one of I/Y's few forays into true peak-time material and, if it's a sign of things to come, you can expect their reach to grow even further in the coming months.
As usual, the track titles are simply numbers. "0000.059," the A-side, is rolling, disorienting and, depending on how you view this style of acidic techno, unpleasant. Place it wisely in a DJ set, though, and you'll have what could be one of the night's most memorable moments. More utilitarian material sits on the flip. "0000.061" falls under the same acid-tinged umbrella, but a big bassline and kick drum give it a bit more weight down low. The midrange gets crazy around halfway, but by that point the steady pacing has set up the climax nicely. Like the A-side, this is music for smart techno DJs.
