Various - f=BASS² (Sampler 1)

  • Formula Records has been a vehicle for Champion's brand of musical crossbreeding. He makes UK dance music that splices together UK funky, grime and bassline. That recipe has led to plenty of solid releases from him, as well as appearances from Flava D and Melé. The label is becoming a go-to for adventurous UK dance music, which makes the upcoming f=BASS² compilation an exciting prospect. If the first taste, which features a heavyweight collaboration from Terror Danjah and Zed Bias, is anything to go by, then Champion is looking to go big. Landing a collaboration between Terror Danjah and Zed Bias shows some serious muscle-flexing, and the two veterans fit together comfortably. But the retro, two-stepping "Telepathy" is just that: comfortable. Once you get past the MJ Cole-esque intro, the drop is pretty clinical. More Zed than Terror, "Telepathy" chooses competency over vitality. On the other side, Champion goes to town on Flava D's "Home," throwing in tight snares that feel like they're boxing with the rest of the song. That rough counterpoint makes the candy-coated vocal samples and organ trills all the sweeter, and Champion's remix nicely underlines what makes Formula such a promising label. It's unpretentious, playful and creative.
