Taken - Terrorfish / Halcyon

  • Taken is Stockholm-based pair Elias Landberg, who is one half of Skudge, and Nihad Tule, whose dubby tech house has found a home on labels like Drumcode and Random Island. With their debut release, the duo set out with a defined goal: to produce and master an EP in a day. This efficiency is evident in the record's streamlined pair of analogue techno tracks, but its polished finishing touches leave no doubts about its craftsmanship. The A-side isn't called "Terrorfish" for nothing. It's a grisly stretch of 909 drums and acid sounds that flash by with the speed of highway road markings. Its hypnotic counterpart, "Halcyon," is a more inviting trip. Processed human voices drift into the track's spectral space like fog in a forest clearing, evoking the serene pitter-patter of Donato Dozzy. Given how prolific both artists are, you wonder if Taken's MO is forged in part by necessity. On this evidence, it sounds like a partnership worth pursuing.
