Breach & Cinnaman - Liberty / Avocado

  • Yuri Boselie and Ben Westbeech's friendship was forged at Trouw in Amsterdam, where the former was resident and where Westbeech, who lives in the Dutch city, regularly performs. After a fine Boiler Room session together last year, the natural step was to buddy up in the studio, and the result is this pair of sonically rich, stirring house tracks on Westbeech's own label. The Amsterdam club, which closed for good this month, may have been a vast, post-industrial space, seemingly ready-made for techno, but warm deep house flourished there, too. Both of these tracks are in that style. From the simple vocal loop of "Avocado"'s intro, Breach & Cinnaman slowly unfurl a soft, springy bassline over which they drip Derrick May-style string stabs and wisps of dreamy synths. It pulls off the trick of sounding like you've heard it before, although the track is still very much of the now. If the more twisted approach of "Liberty"—all trotting beats, twitching discord and cathedral organ swells—doesn't quite deliver the same emotional hit, by offering a grittier alternative to the A-side it proves a worthy bedfellow.
