Editions Haighton - In The Chapel '88

  • Hotflush label manager Jack Haighton debuted his Editions Haighton edits project back in May with Italia '83, a record that fashioned bits of Italo-disco gems into gleaming dance floor bombs. I'd have to confess that when Italia '83 came out I was under the impression that Editions Haighton would concern itself solely with Italo edits, but the American focus of this second outing suggests that it will take in a wide range of styles. The two cuts are executed with similar success to those on Italia '83 while being (perhaps unsurprisingly) a notch less flamboyant. "Oh Capella" is a homage to Chicago that samples Peter Black's 1988 house cracker "How Far I Go." It takes the city's famous gospel choirs as inspiration, pitting gilded harmonies together with uncomplicated hats and drums to euphoric effect. "Bête Noire" feels more laissez-faire. It takes refracted vocal samples from Blak Beat Niks' "Ooohhh" and pairs them with thermal bass and claps to create a summer-haze atmosphere that's pleasantly at odds with the record's release date.
