Dro Carey - Club Injury Handbook

  • Share
  • Having released his last Dro Carey EP through Bandcamp, Eugene Ward helped secure this record with Greco-Roman by including accompanying nightclub floor plans that showed emergency routes along with the music. But it's unlikely that the talented Aussie producer will be forcing his audience to the exits any time soon, whether in his more experimental Dro Carey guise, or his housier alias, Tuff Sherm. The music on Club Injury Handbook maintains Ward's challenging sonic approach. The title track is a slo-jungle skank buried in squalls of brutally distorted noise and bass drops that could sink an island. "Mammal Track" performs a similar function, although by slotting in hi-tempo kicks that crash, bang and wallop across its five minutes, Ward immediately thrusts it more towards the dance floor. Ward flips the script with the EP standout, "Monomiles," where he teams up with two MCs from Sydney's Sierra Leonean community for a potent mix of grime, UK funky and bass that has a languid charm. Ward is no rookie, but Greco-Roman's track record in artist development (see: TEED and Disclosure) makes Club Injury Handbook feel like something of a watershed.
