Ghost Culture - Giudecca (Gabe Gurnsey Remix)

  • A few excellent tunes and the enthusiastic patronage of Erol Alkan and Daniel Avery have earned young Londoner James Greenwood, AKA Ghost Culture, a pretty exciting past year or so. Three EPs have come and gone on Phantasy, and "Giudecca" was the title track on the middle one. A whirring, faintly ominous piece of synth pop, the track also features prominently on the forthcoming debut Ghost Culture album. Greenwood clearly holds it in high regard, but I prefer instrumentals like "Red Smoke" and "Half Open" quite a bit more. This remix by Factory Floor's Gabe Gurnsey bears scant resemblance to the original, ditching all but some distorted fragments of the vocal, which he surrounds with a slow-building array of clacking drums, head-nodding hats and keys that almost seem to trip over each other. Aqueous bass stabs complete a track that feels more like a Factory Floor cut than a remix of Ghost Culture.
