  • Though he's long been an affiliate of Yung Lean's Sad Boys crew—and produced plenty of tracks for the Swedish rapper—I'd wager that many dance music fans were introduced to Yung Gud when he remixed Jacques Greene's "No Excuse" earlier this year. It's easy to see why the two producers go so well together: the Montreal artist's latest EP could have been made from trance presets—an aesthetic that Yung Gud's first solo EP deals in. His solo tracks have a stargazing majesty to them, but the melodies are nailed down with grandiose percussion that makes it feel almost symphonic. "My Guns" is, put simply, a beast. Gud's catchy synth runs—that kind of anthemic whine associated with hip-hop producers like T-Minus—are hemmed in by big, brusque kick drums. They're laid out so precisely that it feels like militarized trap, built for maximum impact without a millisecond wasted. "The Power" takes things up another notch, and what it lacks in the exactitude of "My Guns" it makes up for with killer synths that dive bomb like fighter jets. The EP's other two tracks are solid but have trouble reaching the same heights. The daydreaming "Forever 2001" gently floats on a wistful breeze, while "My Partner" is a jittery number that sounds like an off-cut from Yung Lean's Unknown Memory—powerful, but not quite there.
