Commodo - Shift

  • Commodo has been held up as a poster boy for the newer wave of producers making good on dubstep's long-lost promise. His talent comes through in arrangements: he finesses dubstep's top-heavy lurch with a slinky touch, and he shifts emphasis away from the big ol' bass drop. There's probably no better example of his careful balancing act than "Shift," a 2014 anthem finally seeing release on Deep Medi. "Shift" is a clattering number with eerie, vaguely Eastern melodies—the kind of thing that might've been at home on a classic dubstep label circa 2005 through 2010. He approaches with the percussive thrust of grime, so that the basslines are stutters, the horns snarl and the drums land with a rubbery bounce. On the vocal cut, JME is like the baking soda to Commodo's vinegar, whipping it into a furious froth. If dubstep is associated with anything in 2014, it's an almost ritualistic sense of tradition, a fixation on the past—but "Shift" isn't concerned with any of that.
