Markus Fix - Free To EP

  • The Frankfurt area has a long and well-known relationship with groove-led, stripped-back house, thanks to producers and institutions like Sascha Dive, Christian Burkhardt and Raum...musik. Epilog, an Offenbach label founded by Hashmat Ansari, is a recent addition to the area's house landscape. Ansari has enlisted Frankfurt mainstay Markus Fix for its third release, Free To EP. Fix delivers four warm, bottom-heavy tools that add nicely to his hometown's ever-growing house canon. Free To EP's four tracks are classy, understated and groovy. Like most good house tools, the basslines are chunky and the drums are snappy. The title track makes use of bongos, hi-hats and an inaudible vocal sample. "Until The End" is more adventurous. It's not much more than a looped synth snippet, drums, bass and a sporadic whistle sound, but is expertly paced and builds in energy thanks to some simple yet effective layering. You'll find more subdued sounds on the flip. "Deep Eleven" is a warm-up track through-and-through, helped by a single chord and dusty percussion. "Cable Guy" caps things off with an acid touch, and would be a handy track to draw upon if you're looking to take things up a notch early on in a night.
