Greg Brockmann & Tolga Fidan - Sweet Damage EP

  • Getting emotion out of minimalist house is tough. But many artists—Villalobos, Thomas Melchior, Livio & Roby, Matthew Burton & Kate Rathod—manage to do so. They each specialise in using different tools, ranging from vocal snippets, strange sounds sampled from instruments, or the occasional melody. Popcorn Limited's latest release makes use of all three, which places it in a school of minimal that's popular but hard to pull off without sounding cheesy. Thankfully, Tolga Fidan & Greg Brockmann's Sweet Damage EP does it with class, matching a swung, dance floor sound with a deep, moody aesthetic. And while only the most minimal-minded DJs are likely to play these tracks, every house producer in the world would do themselves a favour by observing the EP's subtlety. Swung percussion is the key to Sweet Damage EP's success. Over a simpler 4/4 pattern the stoned vocals, classic deep house bass notes and sweeping pads would probably fall flat, but here they're deeply charming. The two originals—"Sliced" and "Lighton"—aren't going to be played much outside of the very early and late hours, but expect them to be lapped up when they are. Bruno Pronsato's remix of "Sliced" is more upbeat, and borders on euphoria. Volkan Akin reworks "Lighton" and turns it into the most stripped-back cut here. It's no more than a beat and a smoky background melody, but it will surely get your attention played loud on a dance floor.
