Headcore - Headcore EP

  • The zealous approach of French house labels rereleasing DJ Gregory's music continues here. Last year's essential "Underwater" reissue on Apollonia under Gregory's Point G moniker will take some beating, but this brawny EP recorded as Headcore, with its rough-hewn drum tracks, deserves a second chance to shine. First seen on Versatile, the home of I:Cube among others, back in 1998, lead track "In & Out" flies out of the starting gate at full tilt and stays there, its spring-heeled kicks, abrasive synths and heavy breathing offering some hyperactive entertainment. Gregory is a fan of Kenny Dope's rhythm tracks, and the same gritty, hip-hop-influenced sound presides over "Cage" and its attendant "Beat." Joined by a lurching bassline and flecks of snares and pianos, it's a little more throwaway than the A-side, but works as a tool. Rather more interesting is "Down," which has about 95% of the DNA of "Cage," but Gregory also folds in bold sci-fi chords and a little hitch kick every few bars, which adds some creative variety. Gregory may have announced some new Point G productions, but there's still gold to be mined in his back catalogue, a testament to its timeless quality.
