Various - Artful Division Various Artists Part I

  • The stylish fourth release from Leicester's Artful Division is an EP of deep house and techno that covers a number of moods and features a couple of standout efforts. The first of those comes from Glenn Astro, whose contributions to Tartelet and Space Hardware and an outstandingly freaked-out remix of Max Graef's "Bummse" have gained him some attention this year. The German turns in some bubbling space funk with "Strings," which he periodically dips in a bucket of dub. Like Astro, Leon Vynehall has a penchant for hip-hop, and while his reworking of "Strings" doesn't quite exude the gravitas of his much-lauded Music For The Uninvited EP from earlier this year, there's plenty to chew on, as drunken bass keys and a haunting synth line go toe-to-toe with a UK garage-inspired tempo. Vynehall is building an enviable catalogue, but you sense he's only just getting started. Two out the three remaining tracks adopt a more demure approach. There's Chocky's smacked-out jazz house cut "Blow Down" and the pillowy acid of Rauld Dancesol's "Too Much Saturday," ahead of the EP's sole techno track. In fact, with its gnarled Amen break, Gnork's "Summer Of Love" has a heavy proto-jungle flavor. Couple it with a deliciously bleepy, twisted refrain and the Hungarian shows that he's a producer on an upward curve.
