D. Carbone - Untitled

  • Of the Berlin-based Repitch crew, Shapednoise seems to be getting the most attention. But dig into the growing discographies of its other two members, D. Carbone and Ascion, and there are plenty of gems to be found. They both deal in bullish, often experimental music that's arguably more aligned with what's coming out of the UK than their hometown. D. Carbone's latest 12-inch fittingly comes via London's Black Sun Records, an imprint that so far has released intense, UK-flavoured wax from the likes of Blawan, Sunil Sharpe and Manni Dee. This untitled record features four abrasive dance floor cuts. The opener is the package highlight, and is satisfyingly trippy thanks to a series of melodic bleeps hovering above heaving percussion. The roaring second A-side track increases the pressure further, with rolling drums and distortion combining for a nifty peak-time tool. Spacier textures sit on the flip. The glimmering B1 should suit the tail end of a heavy night perfectly, while the more stripped-back three-minute B2 teases out another bleepy riff.
