Various - My House Is Not Your House

  • Acido's house truly wouldn't be confused for anyone else's—they've released spindly techno, meditative downtempo, "demented bird call"-riddled jungle and soundtrack-style incidental music (twice!). We usually experience their range across multiple releases, each of which digs deeper into whatever nook they've carved out for themselves. But they cover a whole lot of ground on their latest EP, a compilation featuring some of their most notable recent contributors. You might even call My House Is Not Your House a brief aural primer on the label for those who aren't yet acquainted. Label head Dynamo Dreesen's "High Life Witness," which opens the B-side, nearly brings all of Acido's myriad impulses together within the space of a single track. There's the warmly spaced-out intro, the brittle percussion, the DJ-averse tempo—practically Acido-by-numbers, though Dreesen injects it with an intangible heartfelt quality you suspect isn't so easily replicated. Porn Sword Tobacco and mystery man SVN team up for a pair of tracks on the A-side that traverse familiar terrain: the churning, light-touch house of "Fresh II" and a short-lived pseudo-dub freakout, "Scrub A Tub." PG Sounds brings a few quick minutes of blown-out hip-hop to the center of the B-side, and "Monday Painter," an extra-thin, uncredited sliver of modular-synth-flecked house, quickly rounds things out. No moment on the EP marks a high point for Acido—and "Monday Painter" is downright inconsequential—but each cut points in the direction of past glories. If you find something here intriguing, you'd be well-served digging further.
