Butch - Sinus Tones & 808s

  • Is there another producer who can match Butch's quantity-to-quality ratio? With somewhere north of 40 largely wonderful releases in the past six years, I can't think of anyone else who combines such a relentless release schedule with such unwavering quality. This five-tracker for Desolat is another work of casual excellence that begins with "LFO," a deliberately-paced piece of undulating techno that feels like a companion to Butch and Ricardo Villalobos's "Up." "Sphere" and "Tone 2.0" are cut from roughly similar cloth. The former's background of pads is the bed for all manner of subtle bass nudges and sonar bleeps that might have come from the mind of Speedy J two decades ago. The latter's subtly mechanical keys and rolling drums form a calm, liquidy surface that's only occasionally broken by sudden whirrs and rattles. Elsewhere, "Delusion" is dusty techno bliss, its crunchy background textures overlaid with a one-note synth pattern and the gorgeous, gradually foregrounded sounds of a Middle Eastern horn. This already strong package also includes a digital bonus track, "Busy B," which mines punchier, more eccentric climes through chopped-up hip-hop vocal snippets and urgent percussion.
