David August - Diynamic Revisited

  • Diynamic Revisited is the Hamburg label's introspective new series, where tracks from the vaults are opened up for reinterpretation. It's a concept that could come off as complacent, as if Solomun and co were already content to look back on their past with rose-tinted glasses. Nevertheless, things are different in 2014 than they were in 2010: the crew has recently turned from Hamburg deep house darlings to Ibiza mainstays. That same transformation occurs on the first Revisited release, with David August taking on two older tracks from Stimming and Kollektiv Turmstrasse, and turning them into sunrise anthems with sumptuous, melt-in-your-mouth textures. August's turn on Kollektiv Turmstrasse's "Last Day" is nothing short of majestic—in fact, it goes so overboard on pathos that it might be too much for some. The original is stripped of its spiky flex, leaving just a humble rhythm section so that all the focus is on that chord progression, rendered so pearly and trembling that it sounds on the verge of tears. He takes a similar approach for Stimming's "Der Schmelz," which smoothes the edges, flattening the low-end into a warm blanket. As arpeggios flutter in and out of earshot, it's dreamy but less satisfying than "Last Day," an all-too-perfect rework of a track whose most intriguing aspect was its weirdness. It might leave you wondering what the purpose of the revisited series is, though if nothing else, August's breathless remixes are pretty.
