Solar Plexus – Solar Plexus

  • The crew at Sex on Wax have made many people happy (and a few collectors a bit sad) with this re-release of the classic self titled production by Solar Plexus. Originally released in the early 90’s on Entity Records, the track has been relatively near impossible to obtain a copy of, but more then being rare, it was quite simply a genre defining classic piece of work. It appeared on arguably the first mix compilation ever, that being Sasha & John Digweed’s Renaissance, and really stood out in a fantastic culmination of productions. The Original Mix was, and still is, quite simply an almost perfect piece of production. In its 7 minute glory, it summed up the early 90’s Renaissance sound and all that was good about it. Whether it was that stunning string patterns that smother the production, the melodic swirling riffs, the chunky as fuck drums and baseline, or the epic little vocal samples, the Original mix will surely go down as one of the finest tracks amongst a long long line of progressive masterpieces. Truly a classic. The trio that make up the Idiots do the reworking duties on the flip. A quite solid modern remake, with a very delicate wobbly baseline that keeps the production flowing nicely. The vocal rides the track in a delicate and soothing fashion, while some very subtle melodic riffs nestle quietly in the background. A nice bouncy interlude is a good highlight deep into the track, but all in all this is a very lovely remix by the Idiots, and shouldn’t be overlooked by any means. It wasn’t hard for me to put a score of 10 on this release. The original is still to this day a cutting edge landmark, and the remix by the Idiots gives extra value to a release that could have sufficed with just the original.
