FunkinEven - Discipline / Abyss

  • The diversity of FunkinEven’s output, paired with the often low-key nature of releases on his Apron label, can make it easy to miss what this London producer is up to. Rest assured, his forays into earbleeding acid and sickly-sweet disco-house are sounding as good as ever. The producer is no stranger to collaboration, and Detroit young gun Jay Daniel, who appears on new single "Discipline," seems about as natural a choice as fellow hardware botherers Delroy Edwards and Kyle Hall. That said, compared to the sensuous tape crunch of Daniel’s own productions, this one feels a little on the tame side. It breezes confidently along, eyes fixed firmly on the stars, but both have been wilder and bolder elsewhere. Things improve when FunkinEven goes it alone. "The Abyss" is an outlier in a discography usually concerned with immediate gratification. With its fiddly minor key synth part and brow-furrowing refusal to please the floor, it sounds like Funkineven's take on the Joey Anderson sound. As with the best Anderson records, its charms may not be immediately apparent, but they’ll slowly rise to the surface as you bob and weave to its protean groove.
