PMH - Entrance

  • The first two records from Berlin label Finitude Music feature PMH, a collaboration between label boss Marcel Heese and Spanish-born producer P.E.A.R.L. Heese is a versatile but usually hard-charging resident at Tresor; P.E.A.R.L. has developed a tough, direct style of techno both on his own and as half of Agony Forces. Given all that, Finitude Music's first single, Entrance, is a bit of a surprise. It's airy, and almost irresistibly so. Using crisp, smartly sequenced drums as a foundation, the duo unspools long, gaseous chords and locks a once-every-bar beep snugly into the mix. On the flip is a remix from Sleeparchive, a favorite at Tresor's club and label, where in recent years he's released some especially lean, looping techno. His take breathes more openly than those other efforts, but compared to the original, it adopts a firmer stance, with some of his distinctive open-close cymbals and stuttered transitions. It's also gloomier, as the light, easy vibes of the original are dimmed to an urgent hush. It's a strong, basement-ready cut, but PMH's original is what really makes this an exciting release.
