Robert Dietz - Chrome / Famas

  • Share
  • For years a cornerstone of the Frankfurt house scene, Robert Dietz has recently relocated to Berlin. This EP for Steve Lawler's VIVa label is his first post-move release and it finds him in assured form. "Chrome" snaps and throbs pleasingly, with crackling drums and swirling effects forming the foundations as alternating male and female robotic voices repeat the refrain "check one-two." "Famas" is a tonally similar beast that adds a touch of extra flair through tribal-sounding percussion. US producer Randall M remixes "Famas," ditching many of the original's elements in favour of oodles of 303 to produce a jacking slow-burner. The "Fernando Costantini Interpretation Mix" of "Chrome" sees the Belgian producer turn in a mesmeric, propulsive piece of tech house that bears almost no resemblance to the source material. Both remixes nevertheless dovetail well with the confident originals despite falling a long way from the tree.
