Eamon Harkin - Back Down

  • The world generally knows Mister Saturday Night's Eamon Harkin as a DJ and label owner rather than a producer. He's released some music over the years, but none of it has stood out like "Back Down." The track is as confrontational as its title, with barreling drums and abrasive chords that distort and max out like they're trying to break free of the speakers. There's an erratic, analogue quality to these sounds, but Harkin balances the aggression with a tender piano breakdown, which makes that riff all the more triumphant once it crashes back in for a finale. "Species Of Comedy" is a bit more techno, though more in sound design than structure. Where "Back Down" is gritty sandpaper, this one is gleaming crystal, focusing on a chunky arpeggio flanked by metallic sounds that whoosh about in the background. Overall it's downright cheery, with more piano and some elegant cello. The track zeros in on that middle ground between hedonistic techno and subtle deep house that Mister Saturday Night do so well.
