RATCHETT TRAXXX - CLUBILLUMINATI

  • Most people on dance music social media probably know RATCHETT TRAXXX's Twitter account better than his music, which is fair play for an unknown producer who only releases on limited-run vinyl. We don't know much about him, except that Boddika is a supporter and that he supposedly comes from Chicago. On his first two records, his tracks were as fast and jacking as his internet persona is abrasive, but they've varied in quality from solid to sloppy. His third slab of wax, however, adds some depth, suggesting that maybe he's more than just an all-caps Twitter account after all. "CLUBILLUMINATI" has hints of classic Detroit techno at its most minimalist, pivoting around a simple two-chord progression and bounding forward with lo-fi hats that scrape like washboards. Part of Traxxx's appeal is his hip-hop-style, hands-on approach, and the way he tweaks when and how the percussion lands each bar. This helps keep the woozy "EVERYDAYOFMYLIFE" afloat. That one, verging on monotonous, repeats a single dusty string sample like a Clams Casino record, with a clipped Pusha T vocal adding to the hypnosis. Tackling classic scuzzy electro, "WHOREALLYWANTIT" is the EP's highlight, with grungy synth lines and a barking dog sample to drive the point home. It's a suitably slapdash job for someone with a name like RATCHETT TRAXXX, but it's also charming in its own way.
