Call Super - Depicta / Acephale II

  • Every release by JR Seaton, AKA Call Super (and more recently Ondo Fudd), seems superior to the last. "Depicta" is the prettier of the two tracks on his third 12-inch for Houndstooth, with gossamer-light synths, little gaseous blooms and a grinding bassline. The kick drums are the main draw, each exquisite thump aiming for somewhere between the chest and gut, and landing like a well-aimed punch. As the track grows denser it unfolds outwards as much as it thrusts forwards. Seaton has spoken about the freedom afforded by imposing parameters on his working process, producing tracks with a few old bits of gear whose flaws he can exploit and manipulate. That comes through strongly on "Acephale II," which sounds at once organic and precision-tooled. Seaton melds a few key elements—a thrum of snares, more gorgeous kicks and a three-note synth figure—into an intriguing peak-time tune overlain with darting synths that give it an almost pastoral dimension. Fine textures notwithstanding, the focus is squarely on the dance floor.
