Heretic - A Curse E.P.

  • This is the second solo EP under the name Heretic from Tim Clerkin of Eskimo Twins. If you like Eskimo Twins' acid flourishes, there'll be plenty here for you to enjoy too. A Curse is dedicated to the memory of Christopher Hitchens. The title track features an echoing, back-in-the-mix sample of the late journalist and author describing religion as "a curse." Clerkin surrounds this with a brooding mixture of undulating 303 and clacking percussion, setting a mood that Club Bizarre run with on their remix. Its intoxicating, monolithic chimes and bassline create a primetime Blackstrobe feel, which is rarely a bad thing, and it certainly isn't here. "Sharia Law" is a full-throttle acid belter, with a pummelling 303 line battering against popping drums and sharp arcs of synth in classic CJ Bolland style. Abode label boss XY-Me closes the package with a remix of "Sharia Law" that leaves the original largely intact but layers distortion into the mix. Every last noise on A Curse is familiar, but it's all arranged with enough panache to make it a worthy end product.
