Various - Gottwax EP1

  • Gottwood is a festival where house, a genre that developed in warehouses and clubs, is played in a forest. This means that much of the music played there is a juxtaposition between house's shuffle and a more melodic, carnival feel. As you might expect, the first release from Gottwax, marking the festival's fifth anniversary, reflects this style. Gottwood's ethos of supporting up-and-coming talent is also illustrated in the choice of artists. Three of the four tracks are primed for peak-time woodland shenanigans. BEHR's "Love And Happiness" pairs a whirring Rhodes lick with spacious soul vocals. When the clattering percussion drops after the break, it's the kind of change that marks the point when the party really gets going. "Jawn" by OJsmooth is all exhilarating filter rushes and weightless pads. In "Principles," by Nixwax founder Rob Amboule, the bass throb pushes against the chords that occasionally drift above it. eLDOKO's "I Want You" is tonic for the next day, floating a plaintive chord sequence over a rhythm that strikes a canny balance between the character of Four Tet's percussion from ten years ago and the heft of it today.
