Point G - #4

  • DJ Gregory's recently revived Point G moniker is reserved for house that's tougher than his more sample-heavy offerings. They're floor-focused and hypnotic things, and manna to jocks like Ryan Elliott. The Point G series' fourth edition plots a path between the oppressive atmospheres of tracks like "Peggy," where an off-kilter beat thunders beneath alarm tones, and funk-laced fare like "The Call" and "Have You." These latter tracks aren't lacking in percussive clout, but are made for earlier in the night, when the sweat is beading on the walls but hasn't started dripping. There's no shortage of tough, tracky house out there, but DJ Gregory stands alongside Mr G and Radio Slave in infusing even the loopiest rhythms with a sense of liveness. It's most noticeable on "The Alarm" and closer "Too Va Oo," both rolling and repetitive jams but roiling with unpredictable vocals, rhythmic oddities and that simplest tonal trick—making things a bit louder. It means that even when you're deep in the groove—and there's enough here to bury any floor—you're constantly snapped out of reverie by some new sound.
