Anthony Collins - Lie To Me

  • Anthony Collins is one half of Frank & Tony (next to Francis Harris), and in the studio he beefs up his partner's more pensive qualities. On his own, he makes drum tracks that slink like a sleazy smooth-talker, and that's just what we get on his debut for Justin Miller's Have A Killer Time label. "Lie To Me" has subtle but meaty syncopation, the same smouldering quality that defines most of Scissor & Thread's music. This one sets its sights on Chicago, giddily spraying disco melodies like silly string i wouand tripping over itself. With a dramatic breakdown that takes time to recover instead of just slamming back in full force, it's one of those tricky dance floor bombs that could drive an audience crazy for its whole 12 minutes. There's also a heavily filtered vocal from Big Willy that Collins found on an old hard drive, and while his barking spices up certain moments, it's an unnecessary addition to an already full track. Harris jettisons the vocal for his remix as Lightbluemover, submerging the whole thing so the drums bang against a smear of droning melody. The track's tension comes from filtered drum breaks that sputter and cough. It's another example of expert dance floor dynamics, teasing out excitement rather than commanding it. The ruder "Swing State" has none of the intricacy of either version of "Lie To Me," instead hammering on efficiently with a rumbling bassline that hints at ghettotech.
