Debukas - I Am Machinery Remixed

  • Glasgow's Debukas, AKA John Clark, clearly has a knack for attracting big-name remixers to his smooth, housey pop. This remix EP has reworks from four big-hitters (and a glimpse at the tracklist for the upcoming remix album shows there's more to come, with Pional, Drums Of Death and Ripperton all involved). Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer begin the sampler strongly as Tuff City Kids, applying characteristically percussive, jacking house flourishes to "Rings." Optimo's JD Twitch takes on "Shake," a hooky house banger that was one of I Am Machinery's highlights. His version replaces its frantic start with something spacier and continues in that vein through a muffled iteration of the original's earworm synth line. DJ Nature and Acid Mondays each offer takes on the warped harmonies, music-box chimes and sleepy bass of "Minus 24." DJ Nature's remix is an exercise in simplification, stripping the original's bassline and a lot of its vocals while foregrounding the chimes and adding steady percussion. Acid Mondays finish off a generally interesting and varied selection by swaddling their take on "Minus 24" in pads, adding yet more atmosphere to the already warming original.
