Mosca - No Splice No Playback

  • Share
  • Mosca's past few musical excursions have hopscotched between slinky but twisted house and tougher techno grooves. For the launch of Not So Much, his own label, he splits the difference across two tracks. Two-thirds of "Suckle (Twenties)" are pretty standard, if admirably proficient, dark house; there's a pleasing crispness to the snappy, echo-drenched hi-hats and freaky flute melodies. Then, after an attack of bubbling arps, it settles into a stripped down dub rhythm. Its skeletal form is a tracer bullet for "Vinny (Flamingo)," which has a fidgety, bouncy tempo early on. Mosca then overlays it with a pulsing hum, sun-dappled pads and quirky tics and beeps. It calls to mind the deep, druggy weapons that Chicago house maven Mazi produced as Audio Soul Project a decade or so ago. Mosca could surely never be accused of having no groove.
