Inkswel - No More Suckas

  • Burek has never released an uninteresting record, with Esa, KiNK and Toby Tobias among those who have appeared on the Croatian label. This seven-track EP from Australian house/hip-hop crossover artist Inkswel maintains the label's watertight track record. A woozy, slightly swampy quality imbues several of the cuts on No More Suckas. The title track starts with the "no more music by the suckers" radio snippet sampled by Public Enemy on "Cold Lampin' With Flavor," before heading off into an intriguing wilderness of off-kilter drums, keys and croaky rapping from Dave Aju. DJ Nature's remix is clear-headed and linear by comparison, with vocal parts pinging against springy drums and a flute melody to produce a smooth slice of deep house. Guest vocalists feature on the two other original tracks here, with Cazeaux O.S.L.O. adding a loquacious spoken-word passage to the subtle bass and shimmering arps of "Mind Yours," and Isaac Aesili and Charli James overlaying "Saturdated"'s acid squelches and percussive clatter with some honey-fried soul. Iron Curtis and IG Culture both remix "Mind Yours": the former's deep, pulsing effort and the latter's punchy collage of beats and vocal samples offer radically different but equally enjoyable takes. An Eastern-tinted bonus beats track, "Oishi Stylus," rounds off a package that holds the attention throughout despite its length.
