Dusky - 9T8

  • Dusky head back to School, the label that released "Calling Me," one of their early successes, with their grittiest, most minimal offering yet. Here you'll find none of the jinking pads or vocal cooing that offset "Flo Jam"'s menacing bass. Instead, "9T8" judders to a sustained and rising assault of bass and wooden cowbells. A mournful Hammond organ refrain takes the edge off it, and that's that. Considering that several of their recent EPs—most notably for Aus—were spilling over with tracks, it's hard not to feel a little shortchanged. Dubstep pioneer Benny Ill works acid squiggles, tambourines and rat-a-tat percussion into his "Club Mix", while the digital-only "Deep Garage Remix" ditches the acid and replaces it with a jaunty riddim, wrapped in a blanket of frothing snares.
