Beesmunt Soundsystem - The Baby Maker EP

  • The only surprising thing about Bristol clubbing institution Just Jack launching a record label is how long it took them. With their 10th birthday around the corner, they've had ample time to assess the scene, building up a healthy contact book in the process. Their debut release is that ying and yang of dance music EPs: new talent paired with experienced production/remix savvy. Amsterdam's Beesmunt Soundsystem have followed a promising clutch of releases with the acquisition of a clubnight, Soundsystem, at Trouw. Their production career is young, but their two original tracks on The Baby Maker muster a good amount of swagger. With its nagging female vocal loop, fluid beats and penchant for a breakdown, "Close To Me" sounds like something that could have come from Detroit Swindle. It's a similar story on "How I Wish," albeit with the emotional content upped with a stabbing piano, some beautifully rippled bass and soulful vocal sample. In the hands of Amir Alexander, "Close To Me" morphs into a skittering, analogue groove. The Chicago house maven places a feverish knot of hi-hats high up in the mix while a purring bassline takes care of the low-end. It also offers up, as all good remixes do, some fresh light on the original.
