Bobby O'Donnell - Lucid Dreaming EP

  • Following DoubtingThomas's beautifully understated debut late last year, Catch Recordings turns to another fledgling purveyor of emotive techno for its second outing. Like the label, Bobby O'Donnell is based in Leeds, where he remains a long-running resident at Mint Club's in-house party System. As such, Lucid Dreaming, O'Donnell's first solo EP, bears all the hallmarks of a DJ-turned-producer well versed in the art of setting the mood. For those who caught O'Donnell's "The Shards Of Our Childhood" on Fred P's recent Selected compilation, this release runs a similarly ethereal course. "Odds And Evens" marries shrill, elongated synths with Aphex-style pads, urged along by an intoxicating 303 line, while "Hidden" centres spacey billows on a super-charged cosmic bassline. Fast paced and busy, both cuts nevertheless convey a striking tenderness. This continues into the title track, whose steady groove and soft palette sees O'Donnell adopt a less complicated formula. On the remix, Bob Barker hauls the original into dark and stormy climes, replacing its warm, melodious core with a patchwork of eerie sirens, hisses and throbbing kicks. Vivid in its dourness, it wraps up a stimulating second release from a label that's fast establishing itself a distinctive niche.
