Millie & Andrea - Stage 2

  • Releasing a handful of 12-inches between 2008 and 2010, Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott used the Millie and Andrea alias to dip into whatever club music style took their fancy, from house to footwork and funky. Quite often it worked—"Ever Since You Came Down" is one of the biggest curveballs Modern Love has ever thrown, and one of the best and most club-friendly tracks the label has released. But that very volatility meant that Millie and Andrea always came across as a fun side project rather than a serious endeavour. So the announcement of a forthcoming Millie and Andrea album, with "Stage 2" as a teaser, comes as something of a surprise. As with previous Millie and Andrea releases, it sees Stott and Whittaker dipping their toes into the zeitgeist, which here means trap-influenced party music. Vocals are pitched down and up, exhaustingly familiar snare rolls skate over the top, and a string figure doesn't so much repeat as hammer into your skull. There are redeeming parts—namely the crunching passages of indefinable sound that Whittaker in particular always does so well. "Stage 2" doesn't appear on the forthcoming Millie and Andrea album. "In all honesty," the text accompanying the release says, the album "sounds nothing like anything that's on there." Maybe that's just as well.
