Blacknecks - Blacknecks 004

  • Blacknecks cheekily describe "To The Cosmos Let's Go," the A-side from their fourth self-released EP, as a "crossover mega hit," and in an ideal world this twisted Italo-gabber anthem would be racing up the charts as we speak. In reality it's clearly aimed at the industrial techno dance floor, where its preposterous theatrics supply a jaunty counterpoint to the sturm und drang found elsewhere. It's a sound that this pair of anonymous former UK garage producers (well, that's the story anyway) have been working towards for a while. There was "Theme From Blacknecks," from Blacknecks 002; then "Fash," from 003, which sounded like a redlining New Wave instrumental. But here the stiff Europhile synths and white noise washes reach even gaudier heights. Past Blacknecks releases have been solid, but this is their first moment of brilliance. The tracks on the B-side are more business-as-usual. "Hot Legs" is a jackbooted stomp through '90s Belgium, while lurid synth etude "A Wandering Sense of Disillusionment Eats The Soul Within This Decomposing Establishment Of Pain And Suffering (Bollocks To The Custard, Where's The Suet Pudding Edit)" is presumably a skewering of techno's recent taste for high-minded gothicisms. As is often the case with these fellas, it might be a pisstake but it's also pretty effective on its own terms (even if they seem to have, er, left the clicktrack running).
