Xenogears - Multiverse remixes

  • Lucretio and Marieu's Xenogears alias predates their more lauded activities as hardware house explorers The Analogue Cops. With an Analogue Cops album, last year's Heavy Hands, under their belt, the pair have now revived their older name for an LP. The distinction between the two projects isn't entirely clear, but going on the tunnel-vision groove of "Multiverse"—an early taster of Lost Artemis—Detroit techno figures more strongly in the Xenogears universe. Still, though its relentless, conga-heavy rhythms are high octane by Analogue Cops standards, there's a degree of sludge to the mix that's these guys through and through. The track comes accompanied with a trio of remixes. Third Side, Lucretio and Marieu's collaborative project with Steffi, turn in a dreamier reworking whose 303 squelch, while satisfying, can't quite compensate for its workaday structuring. Meanwhile, Vinalog—the duo of EMG and John Swing, whose straight-to-tape aesthetic makes them kindred spirits of the Cops—opt for a functional '90s-indebted house stomper. Only Madteo really pushes the boat out—as, of course, is his wont. On first listen the stop-start slow-house of his "NY Blows-Wave" mix bears little relation to the original. After closer study, though, trace elements might be detectable in the shards of sonic matter that detonate across its surface like machinegun fire. Either way, the results are euphoric and exhausting in equal measure.
