DJ Vague - Porsche Trax

  • In an interview with FACT about the release, Night Slugs associate Helix describes one of the tracks under his new DJ Vague alias as "a slow chugging 128 BPM." For most house and techno producers, that'd be a blazing speed, but for the grime-obsessed Jeff Mills acolyte Beau Thigpen, it's a breather. And even with two other tracks north of 135 BPM, that's what Porsche Trax feels like compared to his other work. Simple but silky, its three tracks glide along with seductive ease. Thigpen, who describes the tracks as building blocks for looping and DJ tool purposes, takes a hands-on approach to the percussion that keeps things interesting all the way through. They might be made for looping, but they aren't mere loops. There's one for every mood: number one, a slow chugger, is full of dubby delay; number two juggles a triumphant house chord progression; number three plays out the same chord over and over, like a vintage techno track. It's hard to pin down what makes such rudimentary tools so addictive, but I suppose that's the point.
